Resumen

This article seeks to address the implications of Brexit and attempts to chart a way forward for the left. It tries to reposition the Brexit debate over immigration, free movement of labour and labour standards in terms of the politics of austerity and a progressive nationalism in order to detach it from current xenophobic narratives of the right. The issue of labor standards is one area that paradoxically the current Conservative administration has sought to champion. It is suggested that a progressive nationalism that rejects the European project has the potential to advance labor rights in a post-Brexit Britain in an inclusive and non-xenophobic way if linked to a wider internationalism that builds on trade union struggles for decent labour standards especially for migrant workers.
