Evaluación de una estrategia educativa sobre tuberculosis y diabetes mellitus para personal de salud de atención primaria en México

Summary. Academic literature has found a strong association between tuberculosis and diabetes mellitus. Some studies have reported that knowledge of this association is not prevalent among healthcare personnel. Objectives. To measure the change in knowledge and attitudes of primary healthcare personnel of the epidemiology and public policy regarding the association between tuberculosis (“TB”) and diabetes mellitus (“DM”) following a training session. Material and Methods. Pre-post intervention measurement of a single group consisting of 31 participants assessed using a structured, self-administered questionnaireconstructed ad hoc. Wilcoxon signed ranks tests were used to estimate differences between pre and post assessments, correlation analysis, and Chi-square test. Scores of over 70% were categorized as “adequate knowledge.” Results. 12,9% of the participants wereassessed as having adequate knowledge in the pre-assessment, while 16,1% of participants were assessed as having adequate knowledge in the post-assessment. There was an increase in the level of knowledge from 53,43% (pre-assessment) to 58,27% (post-assessment), and an increase of attitudes affirming the positive association from 89,56% (pre-assessment) to 96,29% (post-assessment). However, it was statistically significant only for attitudes p= 0,05. Conclusion. Initial tests indicate the importance of training healthcare personnel on the association between tuberculosis and diabetes mellitus in order to achieve positiveresults in comprehensive patient care.
