Interrelación entre la migración internacional y la migración interna en México

espanolLa relacion entre las migraciones interna mexicana y la emigracion internacional es un aspecto relativamente poco explorado. Estudios sobre la migracion desde el Mexico rural han documentado dos trayectorias claramente definidas: una con destino a centros urbanos mexicanos y otra hacia Estados Unidos. En este articulo se presentan algunas evidencias empiricas que refuerzan la nocion de que la migracion interna y la internacional son procesos que han tenido y que continuan teniendo algun tipo de vinculacion Los resultados muestran que los migrantes internacionales que residen en la region de mayor tradicion migratoria a Estados Unidos presentan bajas tasas de migracion interna. En tanto, los migrantes internacionales que residen fuera de la region historica presentan altas tasas de migracion interna, El articulo sugiere la existencia de dos patrones de migracion a Estados Unidos. Uno denominado patron tradicional, formado por migrantes de nueve entidades del occidente de Mexico, predominantemente de areas rurales, con bajas tasas de migracion interna y con menores niveles de escolaridad. El segundo es el patron de migracion reciente, constituido por migrantes residentes fuera de la region tradicional de migracion, dispersos en areas urbanas, con mayores tasas de migracion interna, con mayores niveles de escolaridad y con una mayor presencia de mujeres. EnglishThe relation between internal and international migration is a relatively unexplored issue. In Mexico, studies have identified two separable streams of migration from same rural areas, one to cities within Mexico and. the other, to destinations in the United States. This article presents some empirical evidences that reinforces the notion of a close relationship between internal and international migration in the past and in the present. Results of this article show that migrants who reside in the historic region of migration to the United States have considerably less internal migration background In contrast, migrants who reside out of the historic region of migration to the United Stales have higher internal migration rates. This finding indicates that international migrants from the historic region go directly to the United States, without having internal points of destination inside the Mexican Republic. The article identifies two possible patterns of migration to the United States: one is the traditional pattern, concentrated in nine states of Western Mexico, constituted by migrants mostly from rural areas, with low rates of internal migration, and considerably fewer years of education. The other is the recent (or non-traditionai) pattern, constituted by migrants living out of the historic region of international migration, dispersed in urban areas, with higher rates of internal migration, a higher presence of women, and higher schooling.
