Resumen

Analizing the scientific paradigm in which Epidemiology defines its own field of \nknowledge and builds its object of study -and the ways it explores this object- may help to \novercome present difficulties to aproach the collective dimension of mental health problems. \nThe paper initially states that the concepts of subjectivity and subject have been absent \nthrough the development of the history of Epidemiology and -as it’s lacked a conceptual \nreflection about them- it appeals to categories such as person, subject or individual without any \ncriticism or differentiation. Transposing the category of illness as elaborated by the clinical \npractice to Epidemiology without any mediations, constraints possibilities to recognize social, \ncultural and historical determinants. Epidemiology of psichiatric illnesses hasn’t achieved to \napply theoretical and methodological renewals produced during the last decades of the past \ncentury. \nThe article aims to point out the value of discussing the bounderies this theoretical \ninsufficiency poses to Epidemiology of Mental Health, and the need to promote an \ninterdisciplinary dialogue with knowledge from Social Sciences as an alternative way to \noverwhelm this question.
