Resumen
This article presents the results of a documentary research project about studies related to scientific racism, Science teaching and text books. It was done in order to establish some of the background for the doctoral thesis: “Scientific racism in Natural Science text books in Colombia” and with the aim of spotting trends in research in this field. The methodology employed was Bibliographic Information Mapping and Documentary Analysis. An analysis was made of studies of scientific racism, Science teaching and text books, as reported in some data bases compiled between 1979 and 2015. 29 studies were found, which, in accordance with the aim of our analysis, were categorized in terms of the following research trends: the concept of human races and its characterization; cultural diversity and ethnic-racial relations; relations between Science, Technology and Society (STS); racial stereotypes and eugenics. Our conclusion was that the textbooks on Natural Science under study use the biological concept of human races to establish racial differences for the explanation of subjects like genetics, human evolution and taxonomy. Biological determinism is presented, and cultural diversity is represented in terms of racial and gender stereotypes.
