The current nursing care plans collect new interventions, alternatives to conventional care and some of the little studied, as is the use of various forms of art as a complementary therapy to medical treatment .One of the fields where this has more weight is in mental health, as it allows to act both therapeutically and as prevention. Art therapy interventions encompass all forms of art like painting, photography, music or theater. Its field of action, in addition to the purely aid portion includes the social and educational parts that often are forgotten in nursing care. A review of this kind is needed to guide nursing interventions encompassed in improving nonverbal communication in patients in which traditional psychotherapy through dialogue is not effective, and as a tool of cognitive stimulation and prevention of depressive or anxious symptoms involve many medical conditions. The aim of this review is to show an overview of the current situation of this type of therapy, reviewing their historical development, and evaluate their effectiveness based on documented scientific evidence. To do it, an analysis of the publications dealing with this subject was performed, including research papers that analyze the effect of different types of art therapy on various conditions, always taking into account the type of paper used as well as the scientific quality of publications.
