Resumen

Experimental investigations were undertaken to study the effect of mayor ions in the adsorption-desorption behavior of cadmium and lead in sediments from Lake Chapala, Mexico. Equilibrium adsorption experiments were performed with cadmium, lead, and sediment suspended in different electrolytes. The cadmium desorption was most pronounced in the presence of the cations calcium and magnesium. The importance of sodium, potasium and the anions sulphate and carbonate was insignificant. The cations and anions showed the following order of competition with Cd² ⁺;Ca²⁺ > Mg²⁺ > K⁺> Na⁺ and Clˉ > NO₃ˉ > SO₄²⁻> CO₃²⁻, respectively. The lead continued sorbed at the sediment surface even when salinity approximated estuarine conditions.
