Resumen

The paper presents an experience of research collaboration between a Mexican firm and various public research centers in Mexico. It is a case of basic technological research, that is, research on technologies which can be appropriated by a firm but need quite sophisticated research on the materials that are involved. With this example the authors propose to renew the study of research-firms relations. They will show that the classic distinction between public and private knowkledge is of little use in order to understand how a knowledge that needs frontier research and that is both empirical and practical in nature is generated and diffused. Public science is synonymous of an active and structured scientific community. Additionally they insist on taking into account both the technological learning of the firm and the simultaneous learning of all the actors involved in the relation
