La migración internacional desde una perspectiva sociocultural: estudio en comunidades tradicionales del centro de México

Resumen

El articulo presenta los resultados de una investigacion realizada en el Valle de Atlixco, Puebla, entre 1997 y 1999, cuyo objetivo central fue conocer los efectos de la migracion internacional en las identidades tradicionales del Mexico rural. El estudio se funda en una aproximacion multimetodica (entrevista por cuestionario en cinco municipios, realizacion de entrevistas en profundidad y trabajo etnografico en cuatro localidades). Los resultados muestran las dimensiones del sentimiento de pertenencia socioterritorial (amplitud, intensidad y estructura motivacional) que se articulan a partir de dos elementos sangre y tierra. La migracion internacional, lejos de diluir o desmembrar las comunidades, esta favoreciendo la revitalizacion del sentimiento de pertenencia comunitaria y local. Esta region inicia un proceso de modernizacion desde la tradicion que implica la resistencia cultural y social (a partir del profunda arraigo a la tierra), al tiempo que propicia la dinamizacion y generacion de nuevas posibilidades de desarrollo mediante la insercion de los paisanos en el mercado laboral de Nueva York. Abstract The article presents results of research done in Valle de Atlixco, Puebla, from 1997 through 1999. The study's central objective was to understand the effects of international migration on traditional identities in rural Mexico. The study was based on a multimethodological approach (survey interviews in five municipios and in-depth interviews and ethnographic work at four locations). The results show the dimensions (breadth, intensity, and motivational structure) of the sentiments of socio-territoriality, expressed through two elements, blood and land. International migration, far from diluting or dismembering communities, is favoring the revitalization of a sense of belonging to a community and a place. This region is initiating a process of modernization against a tradition of cultural and social resistance (based on deep bonds with the land) at the same time that the insertion of its members into the New York labor market favors the dynamization and generation of new development possibilities.
