The development of new technologies of information and communications have made possible the exchange of ideas, experiences and knowledge among millions of human beings. Education is a complex and expensive task for institutions. Distance education has become an alternative to solve this problem. A review of literature made to determine its background, current state and the influence of the so called new technologies.
