Resumen
This study identifies the meanings related to the acculturation process as a result of migration, that have been built by men in the age to 20 to 40 years old who belong to the indigenous community El Topo (Imbabura-Ecuador). It will be based on Berry is acculturation strategies, minga is community tradition and changes in family structure after the acculturation process. For the research, a sample of 7 men householders who have migrated for work purposes has been taken. The methodology used has a qualitative approach with a transversal and descriptive scope using the qualitative deductive content analysis. Two types of interviews have been conducted: a semi structured and a focus group in which the results indicate the use of integration strategy in an individual form and separation strategy within the family. The results also demonstrate that some participants perceived discrimination against its indigenous culture, outside and within the community. It was also noted that the minga is still a current tradition but it had to be modified due to less participation of community members. Finally, within the family structure it has been concluded that the roles of the pre-migration father represented a figure of authority and economic support, and that currently this figure remains as the economic livelihood of the family, but it is more focused on maintaining a better relationship with his family. The role of the mother previous to migration has been as someone who takes care of their home and children and now it is related to maintaining rules and order at home. It was noted as well, that families do not have many shared spaces; there is an abandonment of the family due to migration and a lack of this migratory pattern within the community, in both past and current generations.
