espanolEn este articulo se presenta la Unidad de atencion a personas sordas en salud mental creada en el 2002 en el hospital madrileno Gregorio Maranon. Las autoras presentan algunas cifras de incidencia de sordera en nuestro pais y realzan la necesidad de atencion especializada a esta poblacion, por la especificidad de su lengua y la ausencia de suficientes interpretes. Destacan ademas la mayor prevalencia de trastornos mentales en la poblacion de personas con discapacidad auditiva y concluyen con la necesidad de incrementar los recursos asistenciales destinados a un colectivo tan sensible a los trastornos psiquiatricos y psicologicos EnglishWithin this article we present the Unit created in 2002 for the Support of the Deaf within the department of Mental Health at the Gregorio Maranon Hospital in Madrid. The authors give a series of statistics regarding the incidences of deafness en our country and point out the need of specialized attention to this group due to the specificity of its language and the lack of interpreters. They also emphasize the large prevalence of mental disorders within those that are deaf, and conclude with the need to increase the resources to help this group which is so sensitive to psychiatric and psychological disorders.
