Resumen
This article analyzes the countercyclical role of remittances sent by Ecuadorian migrants in the country’s economic stability and proposes strategies to channel these financial flows toward productive investment. The research acknowledges that remittances not only serve as a vital economic support for recipient households but also act as a stabilization mechanism during times of economic downturn. Using a mixed-method approach, including documentary analysis, review of official statistics from the Central Bank of Ecuador, expert interviews, and case studies in remittance-receiving provinces, the study identifies key challenges and opportunities for enhancing the developmental impact of remittances. Findings indicate that, although remittances significantly contribute to household consumption, their conversion into productive investment remains limited due to institutional barriers, lack of financial literacy, and insufficient public policy frameworks. The study concludes that the positive impact of remittances can be strengthened through incentive programs, entrepreneurship support, and public-private partnerships aimed at territorial development. This research seeks to offer concrete inputs for the design of policies that harness the potential of remittances as a driver of sustainable economic growth.
