Introducti on: To ensure the provision of an eff ecti ve and safe health services, it is required of a level of experti se that ensures asserti ve assessment of pati ents; hence, the importance of determining the level of competence of the nursing staff . Objecti ve: To evaluate the competences level in the assessment stage using the functi onal health patt erns model. Methodology: In a high specialty hospital, a cross-secti onal and analyti cal study was conducted. It included 187 nurses from diff erent categories and shift s, assigned to hospitalizati on services, criti cal care areas and operati on room. By means of an instrument based on clinical simulati on, the labor competences were explored in its declarati ve, atti tudinal and procedural dimension. For the conceptual and content validity, experts subjected the instrument to two rounds of evaluati on. Results: The average age of the nursing staff was 39.5 years, 87.7 % were female, 51.3 % had coursed post-technical educati on, 26.7 % technical educati on, and only 2.1 % had coursed a master degree; 66 % showed competence in the assessment of pati ents. The atti tudinal core was the best evaluated. Conclusions: The competences of the nursing staff refl ected is not even reached the level of experti se, situati on that it may infl uence the quality care provided to pati ents.
