Resumen
Migration is part of the Ecuadorian economical and social history. The country’s economic crisis of the late XX century, has been recognized as the most important factor that led to massive migration of Ecuadorians. However, there have been two moments that have slowed the flow of migrants from Ecuador in the last decade: the requirement of having a Schengen visa for Ecuadorian people travelling to Europe (2004) and the diminished job opportunities due to the economic crisis in the major destination countries: Spain and United States (2010). In the past five years, the reduction of migration has created a fascinating welcoming-returning program for migrants. The main goal of this academic work is double, first, to determine the type of media coverage that is provided by the Ecuadorian media about migration of our population. Second, to corroborate the role of the media when disseminating the image of migrants. The research mainly analyzes the frequency and the frame of the published news by El Comercio and the evening news of Ecuavisa and Televistazo. An analysis of the media coverage showed that there is little reportage of migration and that this is mostly negative. Along with this, two journalistic products were made based on an investigative fieldwork. The first audiovisual, which is titled “Un Segundo viaje a la frontera”, was filmed in El Canar (province) in November of the current year, with a total duration of 11 minutes. The second product is a radio program that discusses the government intervention in the issue of Ecuadorian migration, entitled ¨ Al Otro Lado de la Frontera¨ with a length of 10 minutes.
