Resumen
The Icelandic black-tailed godwit, Limosa limosa islandica is one of the few migratory wader species currently experiencing a population increase. This demographic expansion has resulted in the colonization of new areas across the range, and in its native Iceland, this pattern was recorded with great detail allowing the study of demographic process operating during range expansion. Using a range wide tracking programme of individual godwits supported by the contributions of volunteer observers throughout Europe, the expansion of this population could also be studied during the non-breeding season. This research covered several issues such as migration, winter site choice and sex specific differences in winter habitat use. In this article we review a decade of research on this population and highlight the most important contributions to the fields of population and migration ecology, applied conservation and public engagement that stem from the wealth of knowledge gathered during these studies.
