Resumen

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected tourism activity; the economic and social consequences for the countries dependent on this sector are serious. In Ecuador tourism is important for development; the government has proposed to reactivate it by promoting national tourism. This article aims to reflect on the challenges of tourism activity in Ecuador, in general, and community tourism, in particular, in times of pandemic. The dialectical-materialist method was used to analyze the dialectical relationships between the dimensions of development and apply them to community tourism, overcoming the positivism that identifies this activity basically as a source of income; the analysis and synthesis was applied to the documentary review to arrive at generalizations. The results highlight the importance of: Promoting conscious tourism related to sustainable human development and Good Living; recognize the relationship between health and safe destination; develop community tourism by recognizing the profile of the post-COVID-19 tourist. It is concluded, that it is necessary to rethink the way of conceiving and doing tourism; community tourism must be analyzed in relation to the structural problems of the country; it must be sustainable in all its dimensions and inclusive, so that it constitutes a factor in national development.
