Resumen

This study examines two effects of internal migration in major Latin American cities. First, it considers the classic demographic effect, relating to the impact of migration on the size of the population (growth effect). Second, it studies the effect on population characteristics, deriving from the well-known concept of migratory selectivity (population composition effect). The results, obtained by means of special processing of census microdatabases from three countries in the region that held a census in 2010, show that: (i) the migration pull of major cities has declined and in some cases has been reversed, although there is no single pattern for this trend or the extent of the pull; (ii) intrametropolitan migration tends to be the main factor increasing (or decreasing) the population in cities; and (iii) migration away from cities changes their composition, particularly with regard to age structure, although this effect is becoming less significant.
