Resumen

Established in 1989, Concilio Latino de Salud is a small, community-based organization in Maricopa County, Arizona. One of its goals is to reduce the numbers of HIV infection and AIDS among the Latino/Hispanic population through the use of outreach and education programs. An obstacle to reaching this population is that the Hispanic or Latino male who has sex with men does not self-identify as such--therefore, there is no real community of Hispanic and Latino males. To combat the problem, Concilio has developed an outreach program that addresses issues surrounding self-identifying as a gay, bisexual or heterosexual man and the Hispanic/Latino culture. The Concilio also conducts HIV prevention/education outreach for migrant farm workers in Arizona in conjunction with a local community clinic. Another program of Concilio, the Promotora program, trains local Latina women to talk about HIV in their communities. The Concilio also works with the prison system to provide a five-session HIV education program for Latino/Hispanic inmates, focusing on HIV/AIDS transmission, other sexually transmitted diseases, condom usage, communication skills and HIV-antibody testing.
